Although Cardinal #Ippolito D’Este commissioned the construction of #Villa D’Este, he is known for his failures in the Catholic Church. He was a candidate for #Pope five times but never got the position due to his great wealth— a trait not adored during the #Reformation period.

Despite being home to #Tikal and #Teotihuacan, #Mesoamerica is one of the least understood historical regions. Due to the lack of recorded history and the decline of its native populations in the 15th-16th centuries, archaeologists have only explored a fraction of the region.

Studying #Currencies is a key part of historical, #archaeological, and economic research. The size and materials used to make coins help explain the #economy and #technology available to that society. The presence of foreign coins helps uncover the trade routes used at the time.

#Colombia is home to the ruins of Ciudad Perdida. The city collapsed when the #Spanish arrived and was forgotten until its rediscovery in the 1970s by treasure hunters. Most of the artifacts were looted before the site was studied but it is likely the ancestors of the #Tairona.

#Lidar detection has led to the discovery of hundreds of unknown structures. Most of these findings have been in Central and South #America , where many civilizations thrived before their collapse. Sprawling cities were overtaken by the jungle and lost to time… until now.
