1983 PR memo to the press when ESPN began to receive Nielsen data.  It wasn’t Big Data, but a 6.4 for the Aloha Bowl was Pretty Big Data.

The first ESPN press release with Lee Corso’s name, as he called the 1983 Citrus Bowl. A legendary lineup that included Paul Maguire, Bud Wilkinson, Ray Scott and Jim Simpson.

Cliff has the longest run at ESPN and the last person from September 1979. After his final match Thursday night the torch is passed to Chris Berman who joined in October 1979. Beautiful tribute to a kind man.

Cliff Drysdale began his ESPN career Sept 14-16, 1979 at the U.S. vs Argentina Davis Cup match in Memphis. He ends his 46-year ESPN career Thursday at 7 pm at the US Open. What a run!

Tremendous honor for Bill Rasmussen just before a date all the ESPN pioneers love, Sept. 7 (this year the 46th anniversary).  It has been a thrill for me this year working with the now Hall of Famer on a doc on the amazing story of the launch of ESPN.

With Cliff Drysdale’s retirement, today is the first day in ESPN history that no one from September 1979 is employed here.  The 79ers flag is still proudly carried by Boomer (NFL PrimeTime is back) and Dick Vitale,  who will mark his 46th anniversary in December.

Happy 46th birthday ESPN! Researching for the launch doc found that the premiere of "Sports Only", the inspiration for SportsCenter, coincidently also launched September 7, in 1976.  Here is the one press clip on it.

The 1990 origin of Sunday Night Baseball was a "tour of the major leagues" visiting a different ballpark each week. It's first game site April 15 was Montreal, who beat the Mets 3-1. (Season start delayed by lockout)

In 1990 Sunday Night Baseball provided the first national exposure for the Seattle Mariners and their young slugger Ken Griffey, Jr.  This Sunday’s wrap (the 865th SNB) shines the light on the latest Mariner star on a historic HR journey, Cal Raleigh.

Happy 93rd birthday to ESPN Founder Bill Rasmussen! It’s been a thrill working with Bill on a documentary on the ESPN launch. Here we are in his kitchen with long-time ESPNers Rosa Gatti and Bruce Taylor. Bill keeps keeping it positive.
