Reports suggest Labour may introduce capital gains tax on home sales in the Autumn Budget. It sounds like an easy revenue raiser - but the evidence shows it would slash transactions, gum up housing chains, and could even collect less tax overall. Thread:

With two parents on £50k, take-home pay is £79,000. After childcare and rent, they're left with £24,800. A family on benefits renting the same house would clear £30,000 after rent with no need for childcare. You are better off on benefits than on a household income of £100k.

The very best first job in financial media (maybe news media full stop) is open again. The Marjorie Deane internship, launchpad of a lot of Economist journalists, is open to anyone either starting out or looking for a career change. No journalistic experience necessary.

I can’t wait to get stuck into this Dan Wang’s new book on China. Congratulations on the launch - it’s been an age since we chatted about it (and other tech topics) in NYC. 📖

📽️Is Britain REALLY facing a 1970s-style fiscal crisis? Why are investors so freaked out about UK debt? Is this REALLY worse than under Liz Truss? Who's to blame? Rachel Reeves? The Bank of England? And would a bit of productivity really solve everything? 📈 Your 6 min primer👇

Welcome to London… Those of us who do have to go to work are going to have a horrific week. Thanks RMT. I think a lot of the city would love a 32 hour work week too.

Over the last three years, housebuilding in London has collapsed. Molior recorded just 2,158 private starts in the first half of 2025, around 5% of London’s (low) targets, and still falling. What is going on? I have posed this question to numerous specialists, most of whom
