A few weeks before the end of my UNHCR tenure I am where I started working as a UNHCR field officer 38 years ago — Sudan, which is going through the worst humanitarian and refugee crisis worldwide. Here not only to close a loop but also to call for peace, attention and resources.

Today I begin my tenure as High Commissioner for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Guided by our shared humanity and legal mandate, we will work with our partners and host nations, to protect refugees, deliver durable solutions, and confront the displacement crises affecting millions of people.

I arrived in Kenya for my first official visit as High Commissioner.   I will be spending time with refugees, listening to their experiences and their hopes for the future.   Kenya’s progress on refugee inclusion is commendable and offers valuable lessons for the world.

I saw how refugees have access to healthcare, education, and play an active part in society benefiting the whole community. This is how we move from aid dependency to self-reliance. Kenya is doing its part. It needs greater international support.

Leaving Chad, I am deeply grateful to UNHCR teams doing lifesaving work every day. I also carry profound appreciation for the communities hosting Sudanese refugees. Their solidarity is extraordinary. But not infinite. The world must step up its support for the people here.
