“Let’s be clear.  Nothing can justify the abhorrent acts of terror committed by Hamas on October 7th, or the taking of hostages – both of which I have repeatedly condemned. And nothing can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.” António Guterres

“More than 200 of our own staff have been killed, many with their families. And yet the women and men of the United Nations continue to deliver.  I know you join me in paying a special tribute to UNRWA and all humanitarians in Gaza.” António Guterres / GA broke into applause

“Rising inequalities are a second driver of unsustainability & a stain on our collective conscience.    Inequality is not a technical or bureaucratic issue.    At its heart, inequality is a question of power with historic roots. “ António Guterres

“Of the world’s poorest 75 countries, 1/3 are worse off today than they were 5 years ago.  During that same period, the five richest men in the world have more than doubled their wealth. And the top one 1% of people on earth own 43% of all global financial assets.” United Nations SG

“The 3rd of our unsustainable world is uncertainty. The ground is shifting under our feet. … Uncertainty is compounded by two existential threats – the climate crisis and the rapid advance of technology -- in particular, Artificial Intelligence.” António Guterres

“Let’s move our world towards less impunity & more accountability .. less inequality & more justice -less uncertainty & more opportunity. The people of the world are looking to us – & succeeding generations will look back on us. Let them find us on the side of the UN Charter”

In line with tradition that started in the early years of the United Nations, the President of Brazil speaks first in the UN General Debate followed by the President of the Host Country, the US President

Fourth #UNGA79 speaker - US President Joe Biden. List of first 17 speakers includes one woman (gadebate.un.org/en) - average age of first 4 men speakers 77.75 years, life expectancy for men globally is six years younger than that! United Nations GA Hall predominantly filled with men!

I am sorry to see that despite years of talk, gender inequality is on full display at the #UNGA General Debate. Less than 10% of speakers this week are women. This is unacceptable – especially when we know gender equality delivers for peace, climate action and much more.

My #UNGA message to member countries this year: Let’s move our world towards less impunity and more accountability. Less inequality and more justice. Less uncertainty and more opportunity.

Nuclear-weapon States continue to resist disarmament measures. They must stop gambling with humanity’s future. At #UNGA, I urged them to honour their commitments & meet their disarmament obligations.

Two million Palestinians are in a living hell that somehow gets even worse by the day. In the face of catastrophic conditions, the women and men of UNRWA persevere. Now is the time to work on all fronts to intensify support for the agency’s vital mission.
