Glad to see these skeptical voices being elevated. The romantic story (that sells books!) of the "wood-wide web" is appealing. But it is not supported by science. Huge respect for everyone in this piece trying to correct the narrative!

It's incredible how people used to make figures of multivariate microbial community data before modern computing. This 3-D model of fungal community data was created by Martha Christensen at UW-Madison in the 1960s. jstor.org/stable/1934658
