Exactly 100 years ago today, the great George Kell was born in Swifton, Ark. A Hall of Fame player, Hall of Fame voice & the sound of summer for millions of @Tigers fans. Here's one of my all-time favorite calls by George, on a walk-off 💣 by Gibby in '81. #George #DetroitRoots

32 years ago today, Big Daddy launched a missile over the roof at Tiger Stadium. 2 pitches before, @Tigers legend Jim Northrup predicted what might happen then Larry Osterman gave a beautiful call. Cecil was the only Tiger to ever put one over the left field roof. #DetroitRoots

THE BEST ERNIE HARWELL STORY YOU’LL HEAR TODAY: A THREAD 🧵 John Flanagan is an old friend of mine. In 1998, he’d been living in Chicago & through a strange coincidence, he found himself with the home phone number of the great Ernie Harwell...1/4

One time, missing the old neighborhood in Detroit, he called the number and got Ernie’s answering machine. That voice! He would call from time to time when he was homesick and hear that same message 🎙 (Ernie wasn’t on WJR during those years)...2/4

Then one day it happened. Ernie actually answered the phone. John gathered himself and explained how he got the number and why he called. As always, Ernie was delightful and even asked if John needed anything. After a moment, John had an idea 💡...3/4

What would Ernie think about recording a message for John’s answering machine? Ernie was happy to do it. And John has saved their exchange all these years. Give a listen and hear Ernie at his awesome, selfless best, for an audience of one. There'll never be another like him…4/4

8 years ago today on Aug 28, 2014 the @Tigers put the 1st 2 runners on in the 9th inning of a 2-2 tie with the New York Yankees. 2 Ks later it was all up to Alex Avila. Then Derek Jeter was sad. The win pulled DET within 1.5 games of 1st on the way to their 4th straight division crown.

5 years ago today, we traded away the best pitcher of his generation. In return, we got 2 players with a combined negative WAR. So we literally got less than nothing for a future first ballot Hall of Famer.

45 years ago today – 9/9/77 – Alan Trammell & Lou Whitaker made their MLB debuts for the @Tigers. Sweet Lou batted 2nd & Tram batted 9th. Both singled their first times up & they combined to go 5 for 8. The best double play duo of all time would play 1,918 games together.

13 years ago today on Sept. 16, 2009 Ernie said farewell to the fans of Detroit. Humble, eloquent and beloved until the very end. Less than 7 months later, he was gone at age 92. That voice and that smile will never be forgotten. #Ernie #DetroitRoots

Limits are there to be broken. By you and me together. I can say that I am beyond happy today that the official world record is once again faster. Thank you to all the runners in the world that inspire me every day to push myself.
