If you're *not* learning Japanese : depending on the word, characters of a word can be a combo of 2 systems (Hiragana and Katakana) and Kanji (Chinese characters). The first two are made of 33 characters for A,E,I,O,U sounds or for a syllable (Na, Fu, Ku, Ro, etc).
