I like hearing at #ICLR2019 from Brenda Grimes about the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador’s efforts to evaluate their regulatory objectives & decide whether to add access to justice, which it did in 2018. Important! For more ROs - some old - see works.bepress.com/laurel_terry/8…

Janet Welch, State Bar of Michigan, talks at #ICLR2019 re their legislation and mission, as well as their current efforts and challenges they face. Glad they are talking about regulatory objectives. In my view, increasing access to justice should be a regulatory objective.

Interesting new report & recommendations from the Law Society of England & Wales regarding technology, access to justice & the rule of law: bit.ly/2kOYTHM Lots of interest in this topic across jurisdictions. For links, see bit.ly/2Zqu2Ez &bit.ly/2mci66C

Today is #AorticDiseaseAwarenessDay2019. Aortic dissections can happen to young or old - often without warning. Learn the symptoms (e.g., bad pain!), why an ER might miss it (it's rare), & why a quick diagnosis matters. Heart attack tests do NOT rule out a dissection. Get a CT!

My sabbatical project(s) include writing about "competencies" for lawyers: what they need & what regulators are doing. I'd welcome info-email [email protected] This is my Georgetown 3-20 Symposium topic. Below: a handout for NALP re PSU Dickinson Law's Contexts & Competencies class.

GREAT NEW RESOURCE: Check out IAALS’ “Unlocking Regulation” Knowledge Center. It aggregates information about lawyer regulation initiatives: bit.ly/33ZTPSe It has materials I hadn’t seen before such as an @ChicagoBarFound[ation] TF resource list: bit.ly/2CQALtQ

Excellent intro to #SpecialLectures2019. Lawyer and University of Waterloo computer science prof Maura Grossman gives a simple & clear intro about supervised machine learning (& why old data might mean bias). She flagged issues as well as demonstrated examples of current use.

Interesting #SpecialLectures2019 panel - 4 speakers who use AI in law. Broad-ranging -1 topic is the future of legal research. Zena Zena Applebaum highlights the differential impact on different kinds of lawyers & practices. My takeaway is this will affect all, but in different ways.

Dr. Burkell talked about an algorithm used in hiring. Despite recognizing the issues and lots of $, Amazon concluded it was an intractable problem & abandoned it. JB gave guidance on patterns, alternative criteria, using algorithms to surface our biases, & accountability. Useful!

New to me: this Idaho suit over medicaid formulas. Over objection, the court ordered disclosure of the algorithm claimed to be proprietary: bit.ly/37toR79. Gerald joined Richard in highlighting the importance of transparency & reliability & how to balance trade secrets.

Interesting to hear #SpecialLectures2019 perspectives comparing US & Canadian use of algorithms in their criminal justice systems. This discussion reminds me of this Law Society of England & Wales June 2019 report I found during the research for my panel: bit.ly/2QGS6NY

This #SpecialLectures2019 panel discussion is relevant to the principles in the Nov. 2019 consultation sent to IBA Member Bars re the IBA BIC's “Guidelines on unregulated legal services" project: bit.ly/2r9U6Uh. The Canadian examples would have been a useful addition.

After a great intro by Chris Bentley (evocative of Susan Hackett about putting clients first), examples of tech that help fill legal services gaps. Similar motivations as the US A2J initiatives found in this Penn State Dickinson Law Review Symposium: bit.ly/34cCKVu

Thanks LSO CPD & @AmySalyzyn for inviting me to speak at the #SpecialLectures2019 conference on Innovation, Technology & the Practice of Law. It was a thought-provoking two days and I was pleased to join the regulatory issues panel. (A good use of my DickinsonLaw sabbatical!)

I'm in the COVID-19 at-risk age group-with asthma-so I've been taking the virus reasonably seriously & have extra food & meds at hand. But I hadn't yet been taking social distancing that seriously until my son insisted I read this: bit.ly/3d53rjQ. I recommend reading it
