Perfect timing to recruit scientific talent, especially Canadians currently in the US. Arguably, a 1-month post on Science Careers likely is too short of a timeline for such a prestigious position considering the incredible worldwide talent pool in translational research.

Generally across Canada, more applications for Project Grants CIHR were streamlined during the Fall 2024 competition compared to Spring 2024. On the bright side, the % streamlined in the Maritimes Provinces and N&L improved (78% to 64%)! cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/54191.html

These numbers are totally unheard of. This is not something that can reverse overnight. I saw glimpse of issues while a PI in the US with international talent recruitment and retention about a decade ago, but this is beyond technicalities and paperwork delays. This is huge.

A fantastic collaborative story led by the Luciani lab at U. Zurich about the conserved role of ATG-7 in metabolism and kidney biology! Excellent work by our worm whisperer Adia Ouellette on the C. elegans fluorescent reporters and respiration analyses! medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

This is the reality in the US, a massive defunding of biomedical research. Canada is also vulnerable to this. To avoid such devastating cuts to innovation, legislative protection for scientific funding is necessary. CIHR NSERC / CRSNG Research Canada Mark Carney Mélanie Joly

Smoking as an aging accelerator across tissues. At a population level, it would be interesting to determine the extent of the contribution of general air quality to epigenetic drift and consequently the overall incidence of age-related diseases.

Human lifespan increased rapidly in the 20th century due in large part to a marked decrease in childhood mortality. Children were SAVED: Sanitation, Antibiotics, Vaccines, Education and the power of Data. Fostering healthy aging is one of the 21st century challenges.

Phenomenal work from a former Brown Biochem advisee (now at MPI) that got published in Cell recently. I wrote a LOR 6 years ago for his scholarship apps: "Ian is positioning himself as an emerging scholar bridging Archeology and Biology." Oustanding work! sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
