Another (perhaps less known) record, from American pioneer aviatrix Amelia Earhart. She was the first woman to fly an autogyro, in December 1930. A little later, in April 1931 and flying this Pitcairn PCA-2, she attained an early altitude record for a rotorcraft...18,415 feet!

'Compass swinging' an early mark of Supermarine Spitfire in 1939. The base has markings for the local magnetic north, the aircraft is being aligned to this bearing, whilst an instrument fitter adjusts the on-board compass. A little known, but vital part of aircraft maintenance.
