This thread is really powerful. I’m so worried about all the people happily spinning up Mastodon instances with no idea of the hellish problems they will likely encounter.

The fundamental issue any Twitter competitor hits is Gail’s Law: “all complex systems that work evolved from simpler systems that worked.” But Twitter refugees will undoubtedly want feature parity from the get-go.

Not likely to be deleting, also not likely to be moving on instantly anywhere else. Keeping unused accounts for your handle across social media helps to combat the risk of losing access and having someone else spew shit with your name.

I can’t in good faith continue to add content to this platform. Just short of sixteen years here and it looks like it’s over. I’m very sad it’s ending, but hopeful that new, kinder, more equitable places will arise in its place.
