“Turn and Talk” in the lower (and maybe upper) grades often ends up being two Ss talking AT each other. To encourage real engagement/listening, I’m moving to “Turn and Learn”: “Turn and learn your partner’s thoughts on ___”. Then asking Ss to share out what they learned.

I used to count down to get students’ attention, and I switched to “If you can hear my voice, take a deep breath” (credit to britt hawthorne (they/she)). Friends, it has been game changing. I do it along with them too, and the difference is epic. 1/2

Another reason why the imperative work of diverse classroom libraries must continue. I wonder if this parent would think differently today if as a child they SIMPLY went to a school where a wide range of stories were both available AND required? #Frontdesk

Day 4: #12DaysTwitter Being curious about our world, even the one we cannot see, with 10-11-year-olds is a fabulous way to spend an afternoon. But really, does a coin hold more water OR oil?

Twitter world… Clarrissa Chavez (She/Her) and I are looking for a broader range of short stories from a more diverse perspective. This is for our 5th grade book clubs with picture (have lots of picture books!) books & short stories. Here’s what we have typically used, wanting to grow this list!

BEST 5th grade book talk in a while. Kids are PUMPED and intrigued to find out how the characters spend 5 million in one month. They definitely had their own ideas, a trip to the moon anyone? Catherine Bae Stacy McAnulty
