My sister's husband, Pat, passed away suddenly just 2 yrs after we'd lost Victoria. This experience was different from losing Victoria—Pat was unresponsive throughout his treatment and couldn't make his own medical decisions.

This quote from my book is essentially about #EmotionalArmor: a shield physicians often put up to protect themselves from feeling the challenging emotions that come with their occupation. While it feels safe, it takes a toll on physicians & patients.

Let's speak to ergonomics in the context of #Healthcare. Repetitive movements, improper posture, and other physical requirements to complete a surgical procedure put stress on joints that can lead to injury over time. Ergonomics has the power to prevent these workplace injuries.

My sister used her journal to process her emotions during #Leukemia treatments and as a creative outlet. She had intentions to write a play based on her survival, but her life was cut too short. So, I incorporated them in my book. Here is an entry from 7️⃣ years ago today.

#TBT to the first time I saw "Grief Connects Us" at the store! I have continued to learn, grow, and face new challenges since its release. I hope to continue striving for personal growth that can translate to helping others through all of life's unexpected lessons.

This "Grief Connects Us" reader is a nephrologist & a breast cancer survivor, so she has observed the healthcare system from both the physician & patient perspectives. As she states in her review, my book hit home for her because of our parallel experiences.

A physician's approach to difficult conversations directly influences their patients' comfort & trust in them & the healthcare system. This is a time I fell short, putting up emotional armor and leaving a family on their own to piece together the reality of the devastating news.

DYK people who live alone, isolated from family & friends, have higher rates of admission and in-hospital death? Humans need relationships in order to thrive. Especially at the end of our lives, these connections provide us with crucial physical & mental support.
