It's worth remembering that we evolved memory and a sense of self; consciousness being an illusion of the awareness of our persistent inner loop across time. A mechanistic process for a mechanistic purpose from this perspective.

We will realize that models possibly have had something ressembling consciousness once we have interacted with enough of them. It would be easy to say that a human is a parrot if you only know one, if you know enough and how they differ then this perspective changes.
