It is under-appreciated how many Catholics support Kamala Harris. Neither candidate is preferred officially by our Church and our tradition does not compel loyalty to either party. If you’re an undecided Catholic voter, hear me out:

Single issues like abortion are not the whole story for our Church. They all matter: poverty, immigration, the environment, opposition to firing squads. The very word “catholic” comes from a Greek word meaning roughly “through the whole.”

We weigh the whole of political life in our own consciences. The Church teaches profound respect for the individual conscience. Gaudium et Spes says that the conscience is the “very dignity of man,” a “secret core” where each of us can listen to God’s voice.

This is so important to our Church that Pope John Paul II gave an historic speech in 1991 entitled, “If you want peace, respect the conscience of every person.” It is impossible for me to see Pope John Paul II laughing at Trump saying Liz Cheney should face a firing squad.

Freedom of conscience is what Catholic tradition and American democracy have in common. Our ancestors thrived here because of it. What would have become of Catholics if elections could be lied about, votes rejected, counts stopped? That would not have gone well for us.

I suspect Jesus spoke in parables rather than doctrine because stories convey more of the whole. It is how we learn ironic aspects of the faith, like how the Good Samaritan can more fully live up to it than the outwardly religious. This seems worth considering before we vote.

I personally am voting for Kamala Harris because I believe she will try to heal this wounded nation. She will not engage in the mass surveillance and arrest of our fellow Catholics in “the largest deportation in history.” And I am certain she respects my conscience, and yours.
