Only the Congress can raise the debt ceiling - or refuse to do so. Republicans -- including Kevin McCarthy -- voted three times to raise the debt ceiling under President Trump with no budget conditions. Holding our economy hostage when it is in shaky recovery is irresponsible.

What is not happening is Trump appearing on the debate stage. He will leave that to his surrogates, who include all but Pence, Christie, Hutchinson, and DeSantis. Also not happening is a Monday news conference where "evidence" will be revealed by Trump.

Recently I saw a clip of McCain and Obama debating each other quite vigorously --but with respect and decency. I remember thinking then tha the country would be fine with either of them in the oval office. Now we cannot even agree that democracy is more important than winning.

Approximately 45% of Americans identify as Republicans or Republican leaning. Less than half of those identify as MAGA Republicans. So less than 22% of Americans are demanding control of the rest of us. And less than 5% can shut down the Congress.
