I’m old enough to remember way back in, what, 2018, when a team going for first down at their own 34 would have been ridiculed. Now we all just shrug and say, of course they did.

Trainer Bob Baffert on why Nysos was scratched from the Pacific Classic: “He came up with a bruised hind foot. Should be fine in a few days but not today.” Said by text the problem was spotted this morning. Plans to run Nysos in the Goodwood Stakes Sept. 27 at Santa Anita.

Sad news about a press-box colleague. A well-traveled, all-around sportswriter before turning to turf writing, Bill Christine covered greats from Bob Pettit and Roberto Clemente to the California horses and riders of the 1980s & ’90s. A fun storyteller in print and in person.

Not sure how they did it given all chances LAFC had but San Diego FC held on for 2-1 win … their seventh straight on road. SDFC now 5-0-0 against the other CA teams, five points clear in the West and only one point behind Philly in Supporters’ Shield race. Five matches left.

Or AP could wait until at least October to do any polling so voters could, you know, see teams play a few games rather than just guessing. But that makes way too much sense and besides “they’ve always done it this way.”

Beautiful day at Del Mar and a nice gesture by Del Mar Racetrack to pay tribute to our late friend, Bryce Miller. Bryce really took to horse racing once he got out here and many family members and friends will be present to honor his memory.

I know one stadium where this isn’t a trend. Not coincidentally, it’s also a stadium where I’ve attended nearly 30 games this year & spent maybe $100 on concessions. (I will also point out lines seem long so maybe I’m in minority & it’s paying off. But not very fan-friendly.)
