Don't neglect your houseplants just because you're excited to garden outdoors! Now is a great time to repot and fertilize houseplants. And once nighttime temperatures are reliably above 50 degrees F, you can move some outdoors for the summer. (typically mid to late May in Iowa)

Remember to acclimate transplants to outdoor conditions before planting in the garden to give them a better change for survival. Initially place them in a shady location and gradually expose them to more direct sun. After about 7-10 days they should be ready for planting!

Slugs damage hosta leaves by creating irregular, often large holes and sometimes shearing off entire leaves at the stem. They are particularly attracted to hostas because they grow in moist, shady areas, providing a suitable habitat #Gardening #Hosts #Slugs #GardeningX

The planting hole for a new tree should be 2-3x wider than the tree's rootball, container, or root mass and deep enough so that the trunk flare is level with (or slightly higher than) the surrounding grade. Too deep can cause the tree to settle which can lead to chronic issues.

Over-fertilization can burn plants, stunt growth, and create environmental issues. The rate and frequency of application depends on many factors, so ALWAYS read and follow label directions before applying any fertilizer. More info on fertilizing plants: go.iastate.edu/1WBDNI
