As we have more and more data to analyze using increasingly sophisticated methods including #MachineLearning it become critical to think about how the model/biomarker may be used. Just using AUC isn't the right way to evaluate any of our models.

Thank you so much to the Toffler Trust for their critical support. Research takes a village and they have been so helpful in building the collaboration between UCLA_Computational Medicine and UCLA Anesthesiology and helping me build my own career. Thank you!

I always love reading Harvard Business Review for an educated perspective on management issues. Today there was a great piece on the need to put clinicians first in designing our technology hbr.org/2020/11/put-do…

An amazing piece by my colleague at UCLA Anesthesiology Dr. Grewe on what it was really like as an #anesthesiologist in NY last spring. For me at least, it is amongst my worst nightmares as a physician to be in that kind of situation. #WearAMask

So excited to have gotten my COVID-19 vaccine! Thank you to everyone who made this happen from UCLA Health and UCLA Anesthesiology to the amazing scientists and regulators who developed and made sure it is safe. #Covid_19 #VaccinesWork

Such interesting work by my collaborator Christine Lee! It is critical that we have ways to understand what is driving ML Models that predict outcomes. This will allow us to target these drivers in future studies and ultimately improve outcomes.

I can't believe the #STA21meeting is on Friday!! Certainly going to be different this year, but I am excited for our great lineup of speakers and hearing about how doctors and industry used technology to address the changes of 2020.

The COVID R-rate (estimate of how many people get CVOID from each infected person) in LA is down to 0.55. This is the lowest it has ever been and is down from 0.76 as recently as 10 days ago (below 1 means cases will drop). This may be the best news I've seen in a year!!!!

Research takes a village. I want to thank everyone at UCLA Anesthesiology and especially Theodora Wingert MD, director of informatics research, for helping with this study. What we do in the OR matters far beyond after our patients leave, and EHR information overload is hiring our patients.
