'Basic research - research into fundamental biological processes - is currently the largest area of animal use. But there's no regulation or guidelines requiring animal use in this area at all, meaning most animal experiments conducted are not legally required.

A staggering 155k animals were caught in lab law breaches in 2023. Concerningly, this is a 864% increase from the year before. Proponents of animal testing say the welfare of animals is well-considered. But these breaches - and the lack of repercussions - say otherwise.
