Also, while not directly related to the argument, the author's claim that the Ottoman "Hanafi legal establishment, the backbone of the empire, ensured that such claims remained within the Sufi lodges" plays on the old trope of legal vs. spiritual in the Ottoman Empire.

It's about time that false dichotomy is put to rest. In the Ottoman Empire, sufis were jurists and jurists were sufis. Period. To pit them against each other only tells us about our own 21st century conceptions of spirituality and ritual law, not historical reality.

Molla Şemseddin Fenari, traditionally regarded as the first grand mufti of the Ottoman Empire, was a sufi in the vein of Ibn Arabi. He wrote on Hanafi legal theory and Akbarian philosophical Sufism. He wasn't an exception. The dichotomy isn't real.

While it's important to note the numerous faults and short comings of the nation-state model, as this article rightly does, that should not be done at the cost of historical accuracy.

Especially when it comes to the caliphate, Muslims have romanticized and ahistorical view of the past. Papers like this should be working to correct these misconceptions, not perpetuate them.

@DandiaAsad Yaqeen Institute We all have frameworks through which we understand our surroundings. It becomes a problem when we impose that framework on something it wasn't designed to explain.

dan_abramov "Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software" Shows how to build a programmable computer starting with a basic electrical circuit with one light and reads like a thriller. It's fundamentally a book about the nature of abstraction in computer science.

You may have heard from an article in Nature Human Behaviour that there is strong stylometric evidence for Beowulf being a creation of a single author. In our replication study, led by Petr Plecháč @versotym we show it is quite unlikely. Pre-print here: arxiv.org/abs/1910.12927 /1

Interesting!
