My friend Dean is a highly talented sculptor. He grew up in Beeston, trained as a welder then taught himself to sculpt. He's a mighty fine artist & one of the few working-class ones. He usually does at least 2 other jobs to fund his sculpting. 1/9

I've known Dean for years. He's a sweary Leeds lad with a heart of gold. He gave me a sculpture that I love (& says whenever he sees it, shit, I need to fire that) & built my treadmill desk, for nowt. 2/9

Dean is a massive #LUFC fan & recently has been sculpting LUFC heroes such as Bielsa, Gary Speed, Jack Charlton. 3/9

A month ago, Dean was found lying on the floor at home. He'd had a devastating stroke. Now, his right side is paralysed & he has severe aphasia. This means he can say very few words & the ones he can say are often jumbled. 4/9

This means he says "yes" or "no" when he thinks he's saying something else. Because he's Dean (& because swearing is automatic speech & easier to recall) he also says "f*cking hell* a lot. He can say his daughter's & partner's names & OK. That, for now, is it. 5/9

Dean is mightily frustrated, but still cheery. Last week when I took him a Magnum ice-cream he munched through it at top speed then when he got brain freeze laughed like a drain. 6/9

Dean's prognosis is unclear. The chances of a quick recovery from a stroke diminish the longer you don't get medical attention. We don't know how long Dean was on the floor after his stroke. He will probably be in therapy for months or years. 7/9

Working-class artists don't have funds or family money to fall back on. Dean worked for years as bartender at The Angel pub in Leeds. He now has no income & faces many months of the same. So we've set up a crowdfunder to help him. gofund.me/2372f66e 8/9
