#OnThisDay, September 4th 1848, Fanny Parnell was born in Avondale, Co. Wicklow. She was an Irish Poet, Nationalist and sister of Charles Stewart Parnell. Her best-known poem is "Hold the Harvest", which Michael Davitt referred to as the “Marseillaise of the Irish peasant." #gpo

#OnThisDay, 5th September 1931, The Irish Press was published for the first time. It was founded by Éamon de Valera, and ran until the 25th May 1995. Margaret Pearse, the mother of Patrick and William Pearse, pressed the button to start the printing presses. #gpo #irishhistory

#OnThisDay , 7th of September 1948, John A.Costello, on an official visit to Canada as Taoiseach, held a press conference in Ottawa. He announced that Ireland intended to repeal the External Relations Act. This led to the signing of the Republic of Ireland Act in 1948. #gpo

#OnThisDay, 13th September 1903, Patrick Pearse arrives in Ros Muc. His last visit was in 1915, where he composed the famous speech for the funeral of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. This included the famous words “Ireland unfree shall never be at peace”. #gpo
