Even as their positions in the churches were revered as they became elders and as their younger counterparts kept the churches alive and funded. Even the representation of the deacon cannot compare with the symbolism of church mothers in the Black Church.

"Well ___ isn't ugly! ___ doesnt need surgery!" ok but you still believe ugly exists. You believe there are "uglier" people who are less worthy of love than others. Therefore people will always change themselves in fear of being mistreated. So what's really the point here lol

I say this with affection, but I think it would do good to read about the realities and multifaceted approach to the civil rights movement, instead of using a fantasy of it to discredit contemporary movements. Especially when we are dealing with a genocide sponsored by the state.

Circling back. Twinkie reintroduced secularity back into gospel, almost akin to Thomas Dorsey’s use of blues chords in Precious Lord. Songs like “Haya”, “Overdose”, Awake O Zion, and You Brought the Sunshine all blend elements of Gospel with reggae, classical, r&b and disco.

wrong. "[M]any an upper-class Negro church...would not dream of employing a spiritual in its services. The drab melodies in white folks' hymnbooks are much to be preferred. 'We want to worship the Lord correctly and quietly...' they say, in effect." Langston Hughes, 1926

a lot of the things people say “they don’t teach you in history class” was stuff i learned in my illinois public school education. while the quality of education varies greatly across the country i really do think in some cases people just weren’t paying attention

“Good guys” is a stretch fr. Real talk, it was the only time y’all were also the victim of the several leading evildoers who still had friends in your highest ranks.

Honestly this sounds great! Like, if you have a strong negative critique, make the argument! Most of your classmates are going to halfass something positive and thoughtless (or worse, AI generated) your professor will be so refreshed to see someone care enough to be a hater!

This is similar to a point I’ve been trying to make about D’Angelo. That specific, Pentecostal sound he studied to become D’Angelo consisted of names we’ll never know—saints, ushers, and deacons who didn’t believe in using their voices outside of the building.
