Bob Newhart, who died today at 94, carried a single-digit handicap for many years at Bel-Air Country Club. In December 2005 he told Golf Digest's Tom Callahan, "I'd probably be divorced eight times if it wasn't for golf. It gets you outdoors in Las Vegas."

Lewis Lapham’s great-grandfather was a founder of Texaco, his grandfather co-founded Cypress Point, and his father, as Lewis wrote in Golf Digest (June 2010), hit shots for Alister MacKenzie as the architect designed Cypress. A New York Times obit concludes with this golf memory:

The duration of the Paris Olympics opening ceremonies today reminds me of what Dan Jenkins said of the Ryder Cup opening ceremony in 1993: "The way to tell the Spanish national anthem is, it never ends."

If you’re a baseball fan, check out Cardines Field in Newport, R.I. Built in 1908–four years before Fenway Park—it’s 323 and 280 down the lines. A guy told us that ocean breezes, heavy air and 28-foot fences keep balls in the park. Big place for college summer leagues. Love it.

Watching Tua tonight, I’m reminded of a high school buddy who played decades ago at what is now considered the FCS level of college football. After his third concussion, he was called in and told he was done. “For the season?” he said. “No,” he was told. “With football."

Today’s botched attempts at getting fans to the Solheim Cup—or *not* getting them there—reminds us that golf associations have a long history of bungling the art of bus transportation. This from @DanJenkinsGD on the 1993 U.S. Open at Baltusrol:

Iowa's Kaleb Johnson, who already had runs of 64, 54, 39, 37, 33, 27 and 26 yards in the first three games, adds a 23-yarder in the first quarter against Minnesota before scoring his seventh TD of the season from a yard out on the next snap.

Canceling a newspaper subscription helps politicians who don’t want oversight, does nothing to hurt the billionaires who own the newspapers and make decisions with which you may disagree, and will result in fewer journalists trying to hold the powerful to account.
