Many thanks to Killian Coghlan and Alexander Camarena Capriles of Menard Ireland for presenting to our UoGSchoolofEngineering ME (Civil Engineering) students last week on the suite of ground improvement options available to geotechnical designers.
From developing a ground model to soil parameter interpretation to pile design: masterclass from guest speaker Galway Geotech PhD graduate Dr. Kevin Flynn!
Delighted to welcome back Deirdre O'Hara this week to explain how @jbbarryeng set about solving the hidden problems of geotechnical engineering - Deirdre’s talk was enjoyed by the ME students.
This week’s guest lecture on the UoGSchoolofEngineering Geotechnical Engineering Design module covered geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring - thanks to Daniele Fornelli of Geotechnical Observations (U.K.). Lecture also attended by Civil Engrg. students University Of Limerick.
Dr. Paul Kissane of Roughan & O'Donovan Consulting Engineers presenting a paper entitled “Staged construction of surcharged embankments over peat for a national road in Co. Donegal, Ireland” at the recent 18th ECSMGE in Lisbon. Delighted to have contributed to it through the iCRAG Centre S3-PEAT project.
Congrats to iCRAG Centre #S3PEAT PhD student Farimah Fattahi Masrour for presenting at her first international conference on 19/9 - #NGM2024 Gothenburg - on primary consolidation behaviour of peat. Compelling Engineers Ireland 4th Hanrahan Lecture today in which my former PhD supervisor Prof. Barry Lehane of UWA Eng & Math Sci relayed his personal perspective on geotechnical failures.
In a special issue of AIMS Press Geosciences, Barry Lehane (UWA Eng & Math Sci) and I present a detailed geotechnical characterization of Belfast's soft estuarine clay/silt (sleech) near Kinnegar WWTW, 8 km NE of the city centre. The paper is free to download here: aimspress.com/article/doi/10…
The recipient of the 2025 Ward and Burke Construction Medal for Excellence in Soil Mechanics is Samuel David. The award was present by Padraig Burke, Managing Director of Ward and Burke Construction, at the recent UoGSchoolofEngineering Prizes and Awards Ceremony.
