New analysis from Cato Institute finds the tax bill adds *+$6 trillion* to the debt Honestly a bit surprising to me how much of Washington’s conservative establishment — Cato, Tax Foundation, AEI, Manhattan Institute — has been strongly & publicly critical of the legislation

With this vote, Congress makes ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in history, with more money per year at its disposal over the next four years than the budgets of the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, and Bureau of Prisons combined.

I remember seeing this case when it was first reported! And this was literally my first thought. How many drug cases have we all had that were completely baseless? Infinity? Infinity times 3?

This is what I mean when I say investing in things that lower crime is also investing in things that we can all enjoy, appreciate, and utilize. Dual impact. Safer streets and happier people.

We’re not “losing” shit. We broke it intentionally. This wasn’t a solar flare that knocked out our satellites. This was us taking a machete to an advanced weather system because some dumbfucks thought it was going to own the libs rather drown their families

“Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life,” wrote five former NWS directors from both Democratic and Republican administrations in an open letter on May 2nd. In Houston, 44% of NWS positions are vacant.

If only there was some kind of government agency assigned to monitor and give advance warning. Something like a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That would be a great agency to fund well and never gut it's funding to give early warning to save lives in these

To clarify for some of you: If you have "state insurance," that's Medicaid. It doesn't matter what the state calls it, it's Medicaid. HuskyCare? MassHealth? NeighborhoodHealth? Health First Colorado? SMMC/MMA? KanCare Medical Assistance? All Medicaid programs.

While Kristi Noem’s out here blaming everyone but herself, here’s her own April press release bragging about clawing back $882M in disaster resilience grants. The kind that could’ve helped in Texas. They’d rather wage culture wars than actually protect human lives.

This is correct. We know from past experience with state work requirements for Medicaid that this is how they save money: they create a lot of red tape, and then boot eligible people off the rolls for not navigating it correctly.

The floods ripped through Texas on July 4. On July 5, FEMA received 3000 calls from survivors. 1% were unanswered. That night, Trump/Noem fired the people who answer the calls. On July 6, FEMA received 2,363 calls. 65% unanswered. July 7: 85%. Sick. nytimes.com/2025/07/11/cli…

Police spending isn't the be all end all of public safety. Almost always, there are safety investments communities need much more urgently that should not be eclipsed by unjustifiably massive police spending

No one should be caged in a violent internment camp. Criminal record or not. And also they’re caging people with no criminal records. Many have at most a traffic ticket.
