Just out! We FuturoLEAF investigated how the strength, porosity, and mass transfer of nanocellulose- and alginate hydrogels affect their ability to host photosynthetic cells. Access this interdisciplinary material characterization work here: doi.org/10.1021/acs.bi…

Introducing the FuturoLEAF team! Stay tuned for short introductions of the people who are working towards the photosynthetic solid-state cell factories.

Gábor Szilveszter Tóth is a PhD researcher Photosynthetic Microbes Turun yliopisto - University of Turku. He is focusing on the development of bioproduction systems based on photosynthetic microbes and biopolymers. In his free time, he enjoys gardening, reading and hiking.

We published in Green Chemistry on the utilization of engineered Chlamydomonas as a biocatalyst, enabling the biotransformation of cyclohexanone to ε-caprolactone and the production of molecular hydrogen in a one-pot stepwise reaction. doi.org/10.1039/D3GC01…

Dr. Lenny Malihan-Yap KouristLab has expertise in light-driven biotransformations in recombinant cyanobacteria. Her goal is to translate lab-scale into continuous pilot-scale. In her free time, she likes baking with her daughters, gardening, and reading suspense/crime thrillers.

Vilja Siitonen is a PostDoc Photosynthetic Microbes from Turun yliopisto - University of Turku. She investigates green algae as whole-cell biocatalysts and cyanobacteria as chemical producers in the quest towards developing photosynthetic solid-state cell factories. Outside of work, she enjoys nature and culture.

Vishnu Arumughan is a postdoctoral researcher at Materials chemistry of cellulose group Aalto University. He develops biobased porous constructs with optimal mass transport and optical properties for photosynthetic cell factories. In free time, he enjoys photography and movies.

#SergeyKosourov, a senior researcher Photosynthetic Microbes group. Currently, he is designing photobiofilm reactors and optimizing long-term production of #H2 and #ethyleneby solid-state photosynthetic cell factories. Besides his research, he likes exploring places in Finland & around.

For Lucija Sovic from KouristLab FuturoLEAF deeply marked the start of her PhD chapter not only in the lab, but also with its catchy name. In her free time she loves spending time with the friends and family, especially outdoors grilling and laughing

In a recent publication, FuturoLEAF scientists VTT and Turun yliopisto - University of Turku delve into material interactions between cellulose and a grass cell wall hemicellulose, exploring the potential of all polysaccharide-based scaffolds for ethylene bioproduction.pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…

Teemu Suutari is a postdoctoral researcher Aalto University . His research is focused on properties of nanocellulose materials and their use in hydrogels and in biological applications. On his spare time, he enjoys music, concerts, gaming, and silly walks.

Ville Rissanen VTT Aalto University defended his thesis“Development of Leaf-Inspired Functional Structures from Cellulose Nanofibers - Matrix Scaffolds for Solid-State Photosynthetic Cell Factories”Opponent Prof. Lars Berglund KTH Royal Institute of Technology sparked insightful discussion.
