šš Today, we stand together for FOXG1 syndrome and all rare diseases! Rare Disease Day is a global movement fighting for equity in healthcare, diagnosis, and treatment for the 300 million people worldwide living with a rare disease.

⨠Huge congrats to Professor Soo-Kyung Lee, PhD, Director of the UB FOXG1 Research Center, for being named this yearās Spotlight Symposia Series Honoree! š
Her pioneering FOXG1 research is changing lives & advancing our understanding of brain development. š§ āØ

š Drop the word that best describes how you're feeling today.
Tired? Happy? Overwhelmed? Grateful?
Thereās no wrong answer ā weāre just here for each other.
š¬ Weāll go first: hopeful

How do we study FOXG1 in the lab?
We reprogram skin cells from FOXG1 patients into stem cells (iPSCs) that can become brain cellsāgiving us a window into how the syndrome works.

FOXG1 syndrome is caused by a mutation in a single gene on chromosome 14 ā but this one gene plays a big role in early brain development.

šÆāØ Big thanks to everyone who came out (or ordered in!) for our FOXG1 Research Center fundraiser at Chipotle this weekend! Every meal helped support critical research and families impacted by FOXG1 syndrome.
Hereās to science, smiles, and burrito bowls! šÆš”

In between therapies, doctor visits & the unknownsāthere are smiles, giggles, cuddles & moments that fill our hearts. We asked FOXG1 parents to share a recent moment of joy⦠and their answers remind us just how much love and light lives in this community.

Using a technique called immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, our researchers can highlight specific proteins in the brain with fluorescent tags. This helps us visualize where FOXG1 is active and how it interacts with other proteinsāclues help understand FOXG1 syndrome.
When someone you love is handed a rare diagnosis ā what do you do?
You want to help. But you donāt always know how.
You worry youāll say the wrong thing. Or maybe itās been a while, and youāre not sure how to show up anymore.
This post is for you. š

𧬠Why do researchers need iPSCs to study FOXG1 syndrome? Because the brain holds the answers ā but we need a safe, ethical way to study it.
Itās one of the most powerful tools we have to understand FOXG1 at the cellular level.

We were thrilled to welcome a local FOXG1 family into the lab last week!
Tessa, her parents, and her older sister came to tour the lab and meet some of our researchers.

Cryosectioning is the first step in turning brain tissue into ultra-thin slides. Once prepared, the slides can be stained to reveal specific proteins, giving us a detailed view of how FOXG1 mutations affect the brain at the cellular level.

Weāre excited to welcome two amazing interns to the FOXG1 Research Center team this summer ā James and Layla!
Please join us in giving them both a warm welcome! š

Happy birthday, Dr. Soo Lee! š
Your passion and leadership mean the world to all of us at the FOXG1 Research Center. We feel incredibly fortunate to have you guiding our team and showing us that science fueled by love can bring hope to families everywhere!
If you spend time with FOXG1 families, thereās a theme that pops up again and again: so many of our kids absolutely love water. Does your child love water too? Share your favorite water moments in the comments!
