Sorry to see the end of ESRC UniMelb. The Centre contributed a lot to HuNI, from Gavan McCarthy's involvement in the Steering Committee to rich datasets like the following: Colonial Australian Popular Fiction, Encyclopedia of Gold in Australia, Encyclopedia of Australian Science,

Dr Mike Jones ESRC UniMelb @unimelb I did some work many years ago for ASAP and have had various involvements from a distance with the Esrc over the years. It was a great place with important projects. I agree with your points Mike. Hopefully the legacy will be protected.

I was employed at the ESRC & worked with them since on some absolutely fascinating historical projects. It's sad and disappointing to see the University of Melbourne wind it up, but we can definitely be proud of its many achievements! Big 👏 to all esp to Gavan McCarthy!

Dr Mike Jones @nzerik @unimelb Chris Wragge Thanks for this thread, Dr Mike Jones. The dissolving of the ESRC UniMelb is incredibly sad for those who know the history, intricacies, possibilities of the work that was done there. And sad for those who may never know!

Sad, angry that ESRC UniMelb is being wound up. This organisation helped Sophie Couchman & me, 15+ years ago at Chinese Museum in establishing highly-valued Chinese-Australian Historical Images of Australia web database chia.chinesemuseum.com.au Plenty more data work to do! #chinozhist

Terrible news that it’s closing! Mike’s thread captures my feelings. My work ESRC UniMelb as an undergrad profoundly influenced my attitudes towards pursuing research for the public good and maintaining the longevity and usability of data (knowledge) beyond a project’s lifetime.
