IT IS 2023 AND I AM ADMITTING THAT I HAVE NO INTENTION OF READING EVERY BOOK I BUY. I LIKE COLLECTING THEM. I LIKE HAVING LOTS OF THEM AROUND. I LIKE BEING SURROUNDED BY STORIES AND POSSIBILITIES. I WANT A LIBRARY. I AM NOT A BOOK MINIMALIST LEAVE ME ALONE (WITH MY BOOKS).

We found that cash is the most effective & dignified way to support people experiencing destitution, & developed principles that all forms of crisis support should follow A ‘cash-first’ approach can help reduce the need for food banks Read the research 👉bit.ly/3yY7QRC

The telegraph has created a calculator that lets people calculate how much disabled people who can't work are "Costing" them. This is deliberately inciting hatred against disabled people. I urge you all to report this to IPSO if you can ipso.co.uk/complain/compl…

this is very grim. looking forward to stepping up our work The Trussell Trust to counter this insidious narrative, starting w new research coming out later this month about why so many people at #foodbanks are disabled & not getting the right social security support at the right time

🧵 Millions of people across the UK, like Amanda, Kevin and Matt, are facing hunger. Despite living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, 1 in 7 people in the UK face hunger due to a lack of money. But it doesn’t have to be this way for anyone.

✅ Our social security system should be there to support us to live with dignity when we go through tough times. ❌ But right now, it’s falling short and forcing people to go without essentials, like food. It shouldn’t be this way.

Action needs to start with political commitment. We need leaders to be clear on how they will build a future where no one needs to use a food bank to survive. Public polling is clear: this level of hardship is unacceptable and the next govt will be judged on if it tackles it.

🚨 Food banks in our network provided a record number of emergency food parcels last year. But how many was it? 🎤 We asked the public if they could guess - and what they think needs to change to create a future where no one needs emergency food to survive.

a grim new milestone for The Trussell Trust #foodbank parcels to people on the lowest incomes. the thing giving me hope? 78% of us agree #foodbanks shouldn't need to exist in a modern society & we know the solution: it's in our collective power to update the social security system.

❗ And in the past year, 655,000 people needed to access a food bank FOR THE FIRST TIME. Though inflation has fallen, the situation for people on the lowest incomes is getting worse, not better.

‘we need to change how society speaks about social security. if people are too ashamed to speak out about their experience, how will we change the system so it works to support people?’ - nikki, who has needed a #foodbank, rallying a room of 250+ food bank reps this morning 🙌

‘seeing someone with different opinions as also human helps draw me towards them. and shared humanity helps build shared purpose, finding solutions together + building bridges across divides’ - this this this! from Chine McDonald’s brilliant keynote to #foodbanks today.

🚨 🧵 The General Election has been called. Last week, we announced over 3.1 MILLION emergency food parcels were provided by food banks in our network in the past year. All political parties must now commit to building a future where no one needs a food bank to survive.⤵️

📰 Didn’t they see the news? It's been a week since the general election was called, yet no parties have mentioned tackling hunger and hardship in the UK. This general election MUST be the one where all parties lay out the steps they’ll take to end the need for food banks. 💚

❌ We NEVER want to see a sign like this ever again. ❌ The next government has the power to make that happen. They can end the need for food banks.
