i think a big factor here is that US artist alley merch is priced for profit while JP fanbooks/derivative doujin are usually passion projects and sold at printing cost (which is the unwritten rule to be able to openly sell them and not get hit by copyright from the official too)

in order for doujin culture to thrive in the west, it needs its own space separate from artist alley... requiring at least: low entry costs, artists who want to make doujin, attendees who want to buy doujin, and a mindset not focused on profit

This. It's such a consumist mindset sadly. That's also why the tables keep getting more and more expensive, it's all for profit

I do, but i like to give it a little more quality when it comes to selling printed goods... better paper and better binding... If I do it all by myself I know it will look terrible
