In early 90s, Purdue Pharma developed a highly addictive semi-synthetic opioid drug & named it OxyContin.

OxyContin in clinical trials by Purdue showed it to be long-acting with few side effects. The FDA reviewed the clinical trials. They decided it had a lower threat for abuse.

The doctor who led the way to approving OxyContin was soon working for the FDA. The drug was heavily promoted. Now it's the most abused prescription drug on the market.
