California has always insisted that it is possible to pursue aggressive environmental policy without inflicting economic harm. An impending gasoline shortage and sky-high pump prices will refute this idea. In Breakthrough today I trace the factors leading up to this Icarian moment 🧵

If anything, additional regulation reduces competition in the industry by increasing compliance costs. Who can absorb those costs and remain profitable? Larger firms. Many of the purported antitrust issues are unintended consequences of the regulations.

As Breakthrough’s Seaver Wang Ryan Alimento and I showed in May, paring back IRA subsidies for only the most commercially mature technologies would save the same amount of money as the House’s OBBB proposal *while maintaining most of the titles in the IRA.*

While I was growing up, a group of older men met every morning at the local McDonald's to have breakfast and chat. They called themselves "The Liar's Club." What public spaces and orgs fulfill the function of being the "third place?" ryanpuzycki.com/p/building-bet…

How perfect that we might get rolling brownouts in NYC the day before Andrew Cuomo — who bears some responsibility for this by giving into RFK Jr’s lobbying (yes, really) and shutting down the nuclear power plant at Indian Point before we had a replacement — runs for mayor.

Another contender for a new nuclear build has entered the ring; Governor Kathy Hochul is directing NYPA to build at least 1 GW worth of nuclear in NY. Which state will build and interconnect a new nuclear power plant first? #NuclearEnergy wsj.com/business/energ…
