At the heart of well-building is the idea that fractally correct, architecturally literate design can present both an appropriate level of beauty in the street and high levels of long-term utility and future reuse.

TOWNSEND RAISE NOW OPEN

I’m excited to announce the raise for Townsend is officially open! This is a walkable, mixed-use neighborhood in a fast-growing downtown.

Our philosophy is simple: we build things worth keeping.

1. Real places people love
2. In walkable, growing

Townsend is now open for investment! Walkable. Beautiful. Built to last. We’re on the 5-yard line: entitled, permitted, & ready to break ground in a historic & growing downtown. DM me for the deck. If you believe in building places worth keeping, a repost is appreciated!

One of the more hopeful projects I've come across in some time: A charming modern almshouse in London designed for local seniors. Tenants don't pay rent, but rather their proportionate share of maintenance. Bravo!

I’ll keep repeating this as long as I’m doing urbanism: it is in the best interest of every city in hot climates to allow galleries and balconies to encroach into the street right-of-way, giving the gift of shade to the street for free to anyone walking by.

Stockholm: 4–6 story apartment buildings enclosing shared internal courtyards, promoting walkability, greenery, and mixed-use boulevards. The area expanded from the 1870s as upscale tenements under the 1874 National Building Code, which capped heights at street width plus 1.5m

Urbanism isn’t bigger buildings or more density (per se)—it’s using buildings to create coherent space. Ideally human-scale buildings, structures and landscaping to create that space. That space is the civic realm.

An illustration of human scale: No matter, there are different ways how a skyscraper, however tall, can ‘land’ with its feet in the city. One will enrich the street below, one ignores it
