Today we start a #Revolution. With the support of Duke Environment, we are drilling at 150 m test well to learn more about the #geothermal potential of the Durham Basin. Carbon neutral heating and cooling! DukeGeothermal #PlanetaryHealth
Historic countdown to geothermal drilling on Duke’s Central Campus begins NOW! Working towards a #cleanenergy solution using #geothermal to cool campus. Duke Engineering Manolis Veveakis Duke University Duke Environment Brian G. McAdoo
DukeGeothermal well is spudded! We hit bedrock at 26.9 feet. Casing and cementing hole now and waiting for water truck. Tomorrow we start coring to learn more about the #geothermal cooling potential of the Durham Basin! #GeothermalJustice #PlanetaryHealth Duke Environment
Drilling has commenced! An interesting #hardrock layer was hit at 26.9ft, and small samples came up on the auger blade. What do you think it is? 🪨 Duke Environment Duke Engineering geosociety USGS N.C. DEQ
DukeGeothermal Day #2 of drilling! First core sample- about 30 cm of near surface diabase sill! Some fractured (GOOD for geothermal potential) some really solid (low permeability). Back at it tomorrow! Duke Environment Duke Engineering #PlanetaryHealth
DukeGeothermal Day #3 of drilling! Getting a glimpse of the fascinating subsurface geology of North Carolina! #RenewableEnergy #GeothermalPotential Brian G. McAdoo Duke Environment Duke Engineering Duke Energy
November has begun, as has drilling of a new #borehole 20ft away from the original site after the first one collapsed in on itself. #GeothermalPotential #RenewableEnergy Duke Environment Duke Engineering
Thanks DukeGeothermal and Duke Engineering's CEE for sharing preliminary work for Duke to explore pursuit of geothermal solutions for sustainable facility operations. An excellent example of Duke Climate Commitment impact on campus!
Coring started this morning after casing dried to 66’ overnight! Duke Engineering Duke Environment Duke Climate Commitment #GeothermalPotential #RenewableEnergy #GeologicExploration Brian G. McAdoo
Nicholas School researchers are assessing the geothermal potential of the Durham Basin by drilling a 400-foot-deep hole in Duke University's campus. The project is also giving students in the ECS 590 graduate course hands-on experience at the drill site.
The morning was spent in the field looking at a cross bedded sandstone outcrop ~ 65ft below the drill site. What we found aligned well with our core sample from the same depth! #FieldGeology #GeothermalPotential @PeterEricMalin1 Duke Environment Duke Engineering geosociety
Our deepest cores show evidence of #slickensides - proof of ancient faulting. Next step: well logging! @PeterEricMalin1 Brian G. McAdoo Manolis Veveakis Duke Environment Duke Engineering Duke Physics
#WellLogging has officially begun! Getting insights into subsurface temperatures, fractures, acoustics, geology, and conductivity. Can Duke University go #Geothermal? Duke Engineering Duke Environment Duke Energy @PeterEricMalin1 WSP
