‘Maple Leaf’

Today, an ink of my son - twenty years ago - dipping a leaf in a stream. A treasured memory of a visit to Kingsbrae Garden, St. Andrews, #NewBrunswick . I’ve made him look much too old for a toddler, but perhaps this is because I now know him as a very handsome man.

#MummifiedCats

Popped over to the Isle of #Portland for a spot of research & encountered this poor mummified cat in the local Museum. A few centuries ago it was customary to ‘wall up’ a live cat during house construction to ward off evil spirits & bring luck to the occupants.

Mulberry Harbour Phoenix Caissons at Portland Harbour this drizzly morning. The harbour was a part of the vital support structure for #DDay .

This is the steering rudder of a Morane. The aircraft was piloted by Władyslaw Chciuk of No. 308 'City of Kraków' Polish Fighter Squadron. He was shot down over Braine-le-Comte on May 16, 1940. His mechanic, Josef Wasniowski, inscribed the rudder with the words ‘Always with God.’

Our recce in #Belgium has come to an end. It’s been a real privilege to visit Belgium’s sites of resistance & pay our respects to the Belgian victims of Nazi persecution. Special thanks to WalloniaInBelgium for fixing & showing yesterday!

Hitler learns of the fall of France in Brûly-de-Pesche, #Belgium . I stood where Hitler gleefully slapped his thigh to photograph the church where the Second Armistice at Compiègne was translated into French during the night of 20-21 June 1940.

From 1943, 60 Jewish children were hidden by Mrs VAN HAL in the castle of Thomas Philippe de Cul-des-Sarts. Each child was given an alias & forged provision card. Lessons were delivered by local women. Hopefully, Mrs Van Hal will soon be recognised as Righteous Among the Nations.

This is Lump. Lump was Philip Schmit’s dog. Schmit was the camp commandant of Fort Breendonk. Lump was used as an instrument of torture on the prisoners. One was bitten 17 times by Lump & later died of his injuries. At trial, Schmit couldn’t remember if Lump ever bit a prisoner.
