thewell.unc.edu/2022/10/11/pan… Great to see intellectual diversity being discussed at UNC! Too many students and faculty censor themselves. We learn from exposure to diverse points of view… even views we disagree with. Hence the term *university.* Heterodox Academy Jonathan Haidt

New from me: Researchers are beginning to ask if a lack of childhood independence plays a role in the mental health crisis. "Today’s 18-year-olds are like 12-year-olds from a decade ago. They have very little tolerance for conflict and discomfort." kqed.org/mindshift/6062…

Do you think personal feelings or “lived experience” matter more than objective evidence? Or that reason and science are tools of oppression? Do you believe in alternative “ways of knowing”? If so, you won’t want to donate to the Richard Dawkins Foundation bit.ly/3VdkJQs

Most people don't realize that taking offense is a multi-step process. You likely can't control the initial discomfort that most people call offense. But you certainly have a big say in what happens after that momentary flash. It can be life-changing to realize this.

The Stanford "prohibited word" list is a good example of the misunderstanding that avoidance of discomfort is the best path to happiness. Every (good) behavior therapist knows that the opposite is true. We need lots of practice with discomfort to get good at dealing with it.

Time for my annual reminder. #NewYearsResolution s don’t work. We don’t change because we resolve to. We make changes when we set achievable, actionable, short term goals, in the service of things we greatly value. What are your #SMARTgoals for the first weeks of 2023?

Clinical psychology, which literally popularized the idea that repeatedly facing what you fear makes you stronger (exposure therapy) has somehow become the biggest proponent of “protecting” people from any and all discomfort A complete abdication of professional responsibility
