When we decided to have cocktails on the porch and "keep an eye on things," I didn't expect to witness a car get pulled over by one cop, with six more arriving within five minutes and a sheriff's SUV a few minutes later.

Husband watched from the front yard and was later told by an officer that though the car had MN plates, the occupants didn't have MN IDs and the trunk contained weapons and riot gear. We saw at least two people arrested.

We tried to bear witness in case of escalation, but I also asked friends to join me on Zoom because I was terrified from on the porch. I'm well aware that our privilege and our address helped keep us safe. (Hampden Park, St. Paul.)
