Think of your family tree like a staircase. You and your DNA match walk up. The first shared landing you reach, where your common ancestor stands, is your MRCA. You might take 3 steps, they take 5, but you meet on that same landing. #geneticgenealogy #DNA

In #GeneticGenealogy, “removed” cousins matter, especially if you're much older or younger than others in the #DNA database. It can make close relatives seem more distant than they are. #genealogy

A genetic network is just a group of people who share DNA! Use it to uncover ancestors & solve mysteries: Use Shared Matches (e.g., AncestryDNA). Filter by a 1st cousin to create Mom/Dad networks. Split further with 2nd cousins for 4 great-grandparent groups.

Recently, while hiking in northeastern Utah, I saw this Juniper tree where one side was beautifully twisted and gnarled, and dead. But growing out of it was just one branch, living and thriving. Of course, I thought of us and our ancestors and how we can only grow out of them.
