We had our first near-peer mentoring lunch for the MN Inclusive Neuroscience Development Scholars program & it was WONDERFUL 🥰🥰 I got emotional hearing how much these grad students mentors want to be accountability partners, cheerleaders, and advocates for our post-bac students 🥲 it really takes a village ✨

I firmly believe community building is integral for program success & necessary for developing a sense of belonging 💞 So we’ve been having monthly socials and our MN Inclusive Neuroscience Development Scholars absolutely love them 🤗 Today we did a pumpkin patch/apple orchard 🎃🍎 all the fall vibes ✨

In summary, please stop viewing DEI work as outreach or service. It’s not. It requires a special set of skills and development of expertise, it’s not something that can be effectively done by anyone willing (like outreach and service), and that should count as scholarship.

Science Spotlight outreach event at the Bell Museum 🌟 The MN Inclusive Neuroscience Development Scholars developed activities based on their own research and shared it with local families ❤️✨ So proud of my scholars and the work they’re doing 🥰

What a great weekend at #ABRCMS2022. I was honored to have been recognized for an outstanding presentation in the Physiology and Pharmacology discipline! Feels amazing to build stronger relationships with the other MN Inclusive Neuroscience Development Scholars, and network with other brilliant STEM students!

New PI’s should get mandatory training on mentoring. Even ones with some experience. Would also be great if people got asked about their mentorship style, skills and experience when they are interviewed. Mentorship should be part of evaluations.

Sure I could write a ‘loop’ or a ‘function’ but what if I just copy and paste and replace all 20 times, instead. Who’s gonna stop me?

I have realized how easy it is to compare yourself to others during the final stages of the PhD admission process. I have found avoiding academic twitter entirely helps. Nothing against those who’ve been admitted, but where are those who didn’t? Normalize supporting them too 🫶🏽❣️

I'm starting my life from scratch, post-divorce. Looking for full-time opportunities in the DC area, or remote. This is very urgent. Open to opportunities in science communication, and science education. At this point, I'll even go back into the laboratory as a formal scientist.

I think my favorite part about being a director for the MN Inclusive Neuroscience Development Scholars program is seeing how these complete strangers become a whole supportive community 💕 They will really carry these friendships throughout grad school & beyond! I love how much they care about each other 🥹

I can't let this go. I get very annoyed when established researchers that we ask for support in DEI efforts tell me to make sure I focus on research. That research is the most important thing. This common comment tells me multiple things. A thread (1/9)
