Anyone who heard Hannah Barnes interview on The Media Show will know the difficulty she & Deborah Cohen
had in reporting this issue in wider BBC outside of Newsnight.
So this is good to see. I hope it marks a change in editorial attitudes. bbc.co.uk/news/health-68…
Now there’s a surprise…Cllr Dr David Nicholl helped me break a story showing NHS concerns about 5 years ago. To say it went down like a bucket of cold sick was an understatement. Ears are still ringing from being yelled at by press officers
A but late to this…but a big congrats to Jake Morris. I worked with him throughout the pandemic and on a series on child deaths…you couldn’t meet a more thoughtful, egoless and creative person.
The BBC’s responded to criticism voiced by Hannah Barnes and others of its coverage of the puberty blockers scandal, saying it’s proud she broke the story at the BBC. Shout out to Deborah Cohen since her contribution is overlooked in the statement (as read out on The R4 Media Show)
One of great things about BBC Newsnight was working with reporters who weren't just gobs-on-sticks but really knew their stuff. So minutes after 9/11 happened & everyone running around chasing Iran, Abu Abbas even Michigan Militia Mark Urban first to say Al Qaeda - Bin Laden
Natasha Loder 🐋 Deborah Cohen Hannah Barnes Deborah Cohen is a sensational medical journalist
The loss of #Newsnight is an utter disaster….an eg…in 1st wave of the pandemic I was v worried re hospital acquired COVID….i had written a paper on this for Clinical Medicine (ClinMed) w/ the Editors permission, shared w/ Newsnight….but had to be done anonymously due to Pandemic comms strategy
Now the brilliant Deborah Cohen joins us to talk about her work as an investigative journalist and dealing with sensitive leaked information with BBC Newsnight, The BMJ and ITV News #mjasymposium
Who doesn’t love a story needing dozens of right of reply pages, being yelled at by press officers, threats of GMC & COPE referral, Twitter suspension, press hatchet jobs, entry on block lists…Hannah Barnes said if story not on red list not worth doing. (Same applies to Covid too)
What bothers me is that so many national science and health reporters and correspondents - other than a selected few like Deborah Cohen Hannah Barnes - absented themselves from one of the biggest medical science stories in decades. Something to discuss at the upcoming AGM ABSW ?
Much coverage and analysis from Medical Journalists' Association members of the Cass Review today across all media outlets. On Woman's Hour Hannah Barnes outlines what it means and what happens next. It was reporting by Hannah and Deborah Cohen which set the ball in motion for the today's report.

I agree that without her excellent dual training in medicine and journalism Deborah Cohen wouldn’t have been able to play a decisive part in exposing #pubertyBlockersAtTavistock .
She deserves her bravery and professionalism to be recognised even if she didn’t wrote a book about it.
Actually there was one person who did do as much, if not more, to break this story… it the journalist on BBC Newsnight — Deborah Cohen 🤦🏻♀️
