Happy Governance Conference Day to all at Advance HE. Looking forward to meeting delegates later today to discuss Transformation in HE, Governing with Humanity. First, a nice little 6am Hyrox session. Hope I've recovered by 10am! #GovConf24 pic.x.com/WrPsfK7WCh
Alison Johns, CEO Advance HE opening Governance Conference 2024. Important that governors and senior leaders focus on transforming HE and what we want to achieve and how we navigate the current challenges. #GovConf24
Our keynote In Conversation with Aaron Porter nd Sir David Behan, Interim Chair of The Office for Students (OfS) discussing Governing with Humanity in Times of Change. Advance HE #GovConf24
Sir David Behan, The Office for Students (OfS), states the HE sector needs to be future focused. HE provider and student relationships need to be more adult-adult than parent-child. I think there is an aspect about the older sibling relationship to explore. #GovConf24
Thank you to Dr Florence Reedy Monika Nangia and Shona Quinn for being brilliantly insightful panellists at the launch of the Diversity of Governors in HE Report. Great questions from audience and clear this report is a start point of future work. Advance HE #GovConf24
We are in to the after lunch panel on Tackling Tricky Issues, views from the devolved nations Chaired by our own Colette Fletcher with Steph Harris (Universities UK), David Langley (Cardiff University) and Orla Corr (Queen's University Belfast 🎓) Advance HE #GovConf24
Our final session of the day is our Global Panel on How do Different Cultures Govern in Times of Change with Walailak University (Thailand), Institute of Technology (Ireland) and Aegean College (Greece). The convening role of Advance HE to connect global HE. #GovConf24
Governance Conference 2024 being drawn to a close by Advance HE CEO Alison Johns. Important for governors to be self aware, there for social purpose and need to think differently - while ensuring to take care of students. Important that governors support each other. #GovConf24
My 5 year anniversary of working for Advance HE. Lots of thoughts, but mainly very lucky to have worked with, for and alongside some amazing human beings in the last 5 years. Largely people who are committed to improving the HE sector for students, staff and society.
I don't even care that my alarm went off at 5am today (well, perhaps a bit) because on my way to the Advance HE Student Governor Development. My favourite days of the year, always leave energised spending time with passionate people who challenge the way I think.
Our own Aaron Porter starting off Advance HE Student Governor 2. So great to have such a diverse room of student governors from all over the UK and Ireland.
Over to Livia Scott from Wonkhe for the unenviable task of explaining the key policy developments across the HE sector. Advance HE
We are joined by Dinah Caine, former Chair of the Board at Goldsmiths, University of London for a Q&A about how to succeeded as a student governor from the Chair's perspective. Advance HE
Over to Jim Dickinson on "Think, Speak and Act Like a Governor" (title inspired by Bananarama) stressing the importance of authenticity for student governors and being themselves. Advance HE
A wonderful cohort of student governors, experts in the student experience, who legitimately care about making their institutions better places. An absolute joy to spend the day with them as we get to learn so much more about what actually matters to students. Advance HE
My birthday card from Advance HE mates this year absolutely nailed it. Springsteen, The Dog, coffee, food, Father Ted and a little bit of HE wonkery. Starting my day with a delayed train, overpriced coffee, backpack and heading to see a University.
Very brief return to Twitter to let Nick Hillman know about these Fudge Hot Cross Buns from Asda. That is all.
