People love to blame the transfer portal, #NIL collectives, and revenue sharing for ruining competitive balance in college football. But that’s nonsense. The sport never had parity before July 2021 and the power conferences are actually more balanced now than they were before.

I find it striking how athletic directors seem to face little accountability for signing coaching contracts with enormous buyouts. It raises Qs about how much actual authority they have in these decisions, and whether their multi-million-dollar salaries are justified.

But there’s a cap on what athletes can make? Make it make sense 🤷‍♂️

College basketball needs a commissioner or a leadership structure that can make decisions on all of these agenda items and more. It might even take a “summit” with the NBA and FIBA Basketball. 1. JUCO to NCAA eligibility 2. International pro to NCAA eligibility 3. Multiple transfer

This article takes a very good look at how roster building in men’s college basketball has changed. Teams have to be more strategic in how they fill their rosters than in the past. Especially with how they allocate their payroll.

Not unsurprisingly, P4 schools want to revise the House settlement to eliminate the $2.5M rev-share cap hit for new scholarships. It effectively made many P4 schools’ cap only $18M this year. Which disadvantaged them in some sports b/c they have ~$15M 🏈 rev-share payrolls.

The importance for athletes to have representation that knows what they are doing will become more and more crucial! Make sure the people around you helping with these deals understand all current landscape changes.

This will be a big one. If an injunction is granted in Patterson v NCAA it all DI athletes could receive 5 seasons of competition to be used in 5 years. The timing of the hearing is set so that 🏈 players & coaches will know if a player has another year before the portal opens.

One of the greatest days of the year is here! The start of college basketball! Good luck to all the young men and woman beginning their seasons.

This does a good job of explaining why many P4 basketball teams have smaller rev share budgets than some Big East teams and other teams in non-football conferences. It also explains how they have to use third party NIL dollars to fill the gap.
