Our new work using NMJ-on-a-Chip platform underline why synaptic mitochondria may be the reason for selective vulnerability in motor neuron disease jcs.biologists.org/content/early/…

My talented postdoc Wei-Hua Chiu worked out how mutant @alpha_synuclein in intact brainstem neurons slows their electrical activity. Cool electrophysiological mechanism causing nonmotor symptoms that presage #Parkinsons by decades. Future #biomarker? disq.us/t/3jwvyja. Pls RT

This year I spent >10K from my research funds to pay publication fees and for color figures. At the same time I reviewed for the same journals numerous articles, for free. In 2017, it was reported that journal publishers had 36% margin – higher than Apple, Google, or Amazon.

Excited to announce our new paper "Aberrant activity of mitochondrial NCLX is linked to impaired synaptic transmission and is associated with mental retardation" just out in Communications Biology (rdcu.be/clNni). Excellent work by Alexandra Stavsky!

OK then, our paper eLife - the journal. Conceived by Daniel Gitler & transcontinental collab. Lead authors Alexandra (Sasha) Stavsky & Leonardo Parra-Rivas. Thanks to anon reviewers ("highly relevant" "elegant"). Previously, we showed synapsin binds alpha-synuclein and is necessary for a-syn function.🧵1/10
