🆕Paper MPIDR: Diego Alburez Enrique Acosta Emilio Zagheni & Nathalie E. Williams studied the extent & duration of bereavement among those left behind in armed conflict and predict how long & intensely this grief is likely to last. University of Washington Sociology CED Barcelona demogr.mpg.de/go/conflictber…

Wartime bereavement is high (eg in 2023, 1 in every 67 Palestinians had lost a child to war) and is projected to endure. Reducing deaths now will prevent future escalation of violence fueled by resentment & generational trauma. Read Science Advances piece: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

The experience of losing a child is increasingly uncommon worldwide but is no less devastating for parents who experience it. Has child loss become more predictable for mothers over time? An answer in our new paper out in #PopStudies British Society for Population Studies - BSPS 👇

📣🆕study by Diego Alburez Ugofilippo Basellini & Emilio Zagheni shows that the loss of offspring changes from a relatively common life event, usually experienced by young mothers, to a rare event that is distributed across the maternal life course. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10… #kinship #bereavement

"History shows that it is possible to achieve reconciliation even in societies with a long history of violence". Excellent coverage by Haaretz הארץ of our research on the long-term consequences of kin loss in high-intensity wars w/Enrique Acosta Emilio Zagheni 👇 haaretz.co.il/science/social…

Happy&healthy within the Family: Read the translation of our article from the Infoletter "Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand". Bettina Hünteler & K. Hank found that well-being partly depends on the family constellations we are embedded in. demogr.mpg.de/go/happyandhea… Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology

Even if all hostilities were to cease immediately, we estimate it would take over 50 years of uninterrupted peace to reduce the proportion of bereaved individuals in the Palestinian population to a quarter of current levels. New article w/ Enrique Acosta 👇 theconversation.com/the-political-…

A new analysis of Norwegian registries finds an association between family transitions and wealth differences over the life course, shedding light on the role of family structures and dynamics in reproducing social inequalities. Great work by Bettina Hünteler, @theresanutz, @JoWoern!
