Last night was the 1st meeting of the NYPD 109th Precinct Community Council after the summer break. That means we had 3 months of officers to honor for their outstanding work in our community stopping robberies, taking guns off our streets, and solving crimes. Congrats to the honorees!

Lewis Latimer’s story is a testament to the extraordinary contributions made to this country by people like him, who are often forgotten to history because of the color of their skin. It was great to join the @latimerhouse Museum today to celebrate his 176th birthday!

Today is the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, when we recognize the integral role the Hispanic/Latino community has played in our collective history in the U.S., and reflect on the presence these communities had in parts of this country before the borders that define it today.

The annual Fall Festival is only 5 days away! I joined co-sponsor Glow Cultural Center and reps from some of the over 60 supporters on Sunday to discuss details of this year’s event, which will take place on Saturday, September 21, from 12-4PM in Kissena Corridor Park.

I joined the Malaysia Association of America on Sunday for their annual parade celebrating the 67th Independence Day of Malaysia. The parade down Flushing’s Main Street also celebrated an important milestone for the group: its 40th anniversary!

Today is Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important holidays in China, where it has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. Today, similar celebration take place across Asia. Eat a mooncake and hang a lantern to light your way to prosperity. Zhong qiu jie kuai le!

Today is Chuseok, also known as Korean Thanksgiving because it is a special time for family, friends and food. Wishing the Korean community in my district and everywhere a very Happy Chuseok! Chuseok jal bonaeseyo!

Your vote counts! Today is National Voter Registration Day, and my office will be at the Latimer Gardens Community Center (139-10 34th Avenue) from 11:30AM-1PM helping people register to vote. We will have registration forms in multiple languages.

I was appalled by the bigoted vandalism at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Melville. The BAPS Mandir in my district has a 50-year history as an amazing and valued part of Flushing, and what took place in Melville was an unacceptable act of hate. huntingtonnow.com/leaders-denoun…

I enjoyed a traditional Chinese opera performance during a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at the Selfhelp Community Services Rosenthal Senior Center this week. Thanks to State Senator John C. Liu for donating the mooncakes that were distributed during the event!
