There’s no silver bullet to fix North America’s epidemic of traffic violence. Instead, local leaders—inside and outside of government—need to take prudent, thoughtful and purposeful steps to learn from the crashes happening in their communities, then put that knowledge to work.

The Los Angeles Traffic Ordinance of 1925 went into effect 100 years ago this Friday, January 24. The new law gave motorists priority in the city’s streets and became the model ordinance for the whole country. L.A.’s mayor opposed it.
