Is McLuhan a technological determinist? Every answer that's not a boring truism demands deeper examination... substackfwd.xyz/?url=https://l

In the past, I've usually just poked fun at simulation-theory believers. But after what I wrote about McLuhan and his faith yesterday, I have to look at Elon Musk's quote below in a new light.

“McLuhan was showing how careful erudition, and the ways in which analogical thinking can grant one the superhuman capacity to shift psychological frames at will, can liberate people from socially-constructed modes of being.” McLuhan as Liberator of the Technologically Determined

FAIRYLAND??? The New York Times gives us one more clue that we're all trapped in a novel written by Kilgore Trout (i.e. me 😏) written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. From Alan Rudolph's adaptation of Breakfast of Champions:

One easy trick to get the world to format itself faster for compatibility to its new media is coercion. Soft-power, hard power, all the rest. All the money in the world is banking on faster uptake, then we are looking at a great deal of incentives for coercion.

Wow this is absolutely terrifying, poor woman. If I had had a common name during my year of psychosis it could have been so much worse. 😬

It may be brutal of me, but I dream of a world where everyone who wears Ray-Bans in public become the target of physical assault, to the point where the entire style goes extinct. The first style brand (of many) to commit suicide by embracing surveillance tech. Worthy sacrifice.

If we had stuck with the “data bank” metaphor for remote servers, would we have said “withdraw” and “deposit” for download and upload? Would we have referred to front-end interfaces as “tellers”? Notably, we've kept the “accounts” metaphor, albeit at one-to-one for identity.

Rewatching Oliver Stone's Wild Palms. I actually met Bruce Palmer by the way, through Gerry Fialka. His Marvel Universe is sublime! But Belushi! Sheesh! Ugh!

From time to time, I evaluate responses from LLMs to questions that I know the answer to. The latest LLMs, given long, elaborate texts directly, remain pseudo-eloquent morons. One should always read them with condescension.

The entire bubble UI concept is wrong. It makes everything detached from the frame. The mental signal that it used to give--i.e. "I am attached to this frame permanently" is now replaced with "I could be fucking anywhere floating abouts, deal with it"
